How we verify

NYC Licensed Contractors is compiled from public records, not from who paid to be listed.

Sources

• NYC DCWP Issued Licenses (NYC Open Data w7w3-xahh) — Every license issued by the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, with business name, address, phone, status and expiry, published on NYC Open Data.
• NYC DCWP: check a license — The City's own lookup. Every profile points to it.
• DCWP Home Improvement Contractor Trust Fund — What the fund covers and how to claim.

We download the DCWP issued-licenses file from NYC Open Data and keep rows whose business category is Home Improvement Contractor, whose status is Active and whose expiry date is on or after the day we checked. Licenses in any other status are simply left out; we never label a named business as unlicensed.

For businesses inside New York City we use the borough as the place (the file's own "city" is a postal neighbourhood such as Astoria or Flushing, kept as a fact on the profile). Businesses outside the city appear under their mailing city.

The DCWP file has no service categories. Trade tags come from words in the registered business name and are hints, not verified services. Verified means only that the license is active in the City file on the date shown.

Lists are alphabetical. We do not rate, rank or publish complaints. Featured firms appear in a labelled box and never change the order.

What a badge means

DCWP license active: the business appears in the NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection issued-licenses file as a Home Improvement Contractor with status Active and an expiry date on or after the day we checked. We only publish positive matches. A listing without a badge is not an accusation — most gaps are name variations between registries.

Freshness

Data was last refreshed on 2026-09-30. NYC Open Data updates the DCWP file daily; we re-pull it weekly.
